And here we are—9 Townsend Street. The historic Eells House. Our walking tour of Walton’s rich past wraps up right here.
Originally built in the mid-1850s, this home has been saved from its days as a fading apartment building, the house was meticulously restored and taken over by the Walton Historical Society in 2001.
Today, guided by a dedicated 16-member board of volunteers and leaders—including President Jason Schwartz and The Walton Historical Society Historian Deb Bartlett—the society acts as the absolute guardian of our community’s story. Inside, they actively track down, retrieve, and display fascinating artifacts from influential former residents near and far.
When you step through those doors, you will find incredible pieces of local lore. You'll see Azel Hyde’s legendary brass camp kettle from the very first town meeting in 1797. You'll find original Eells family heirlooms, and rich exhibits celebrating Walton's industrial boom—including the history of the locally manufactured Munn pianos that came straight off West Street.
Of course, there is far more history tucked into the streets of Walton than we could ever cover on a single trail. Think about the old military armories, the 1832 Christ Episcopal Church, the veterans resting in our local cemeteries, and the untold stories of the river mills.
We invite you to step inside the Eells House to explore the rest of the collection firsthand. While you are here, please consider picking up a local history book or two, or making a donation to help support the preservation of our past.
